The Department for Transport’s Security Compliance team have a key role to play in the Government's fight against terrorism, alongside colleagues in Whitehall, the Police and Security Service. Our aim is to protect the travelling public, transport facilities and those employed in the transport industries from terrorist motivated acts of violence and to retain public confidence in transport security.

The majority of posts will focus on monitoring compliance with the requirements of the UK aviation security regimes with a small number of posts focussing on assessing compliance with the requirements of land transport and maritime security regimes. Successful applicants will be appointed as Transport Security Inspectors and may have the opportunity to work in other fields in the future/may be expected to do so in support of business priorities.

The posts require the ability to deliver results with light supervision, often under pressure, and working to a tight timescale. A flexible approach is needed; the work does not always fit to standard conditioned hours. Where necessary, overtime is payable or time off in lieu. The posts require a willingness to travel within the UK including some overnight stays and sometimes at short notice.

The National Audit Office (NAO) is at the heart of the drive for cost effective public services. Independent of government, the NAO scrutinises public spending on behalf of Parliament, helping it to hold government departments to account and helping public service managers to improve performance and service delivery. We aim to do this by developing and applying our knowledge to deliver high performance and increase our influence. Crucial to our success is our ability to secure the maximum value from our extensive and specialist knowledge. We will do this by creating the processes, infrastructure and culture to enable us to share what we know with each other, with our clients and with the wider public sector. The post-holder will play a key role in making this happen.

The greatest savings and reform will only be achieved by working across government. The Efficiency and Reform Group (ERG) is able to look strategically across departmental boundaries with a tough central mandate to deliver real, cashable, efficiencies by improving our spending processes and help protect key priorities by modernising the ways of delivering services. ERG aims to change the culture on spending, use transparency to help the public hold Government to account, and to get rid of unnecessary targets and processes.
Of course, in a role of this profile, your keen political antennae, eye for risk management, and ability to thrive under real media and parliamentary scrutiny will all be crucial.

In return, this role offers substantial reach and influence, with the chance to lead a major, global public service through a period of unprecedented change.
