New Chief Executive for Her Majesty's Courts Service
Peter Handcock CBE, former Director General of the Ministry of Justice’s Access to Justice Group, today takes up the role of Chief Executive of Her Majesty’s Courts Service. His appointment follows the retirement of Chris Mayer, who held the post since 2008.
Peter has also been appointed Chief Executive Designate of the new integrated courts and tribunals service which is due to launch in April 2011. The new agency will bring together courts and tribunals into a single organisation which will continue to deliver improvements in the services provided to courts and tribunal users.
Peter Handcock has worked in the court and tribunal system for over 30 years, in both operational and headquarters posts. Prior to his appointment as Director General of the Access to Justice Group in 2008 he was the Chief Executive of the Tribunals Service.

New Lasting Power of Attorney forms
New, revised, Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) forms have been launched today (1st October) by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). After a consultation process involving customers, stakeholders & staff the forms were redesigned to be simpler and easier to complete.
What is it?
An LPA is a legal document that allows you to plan ahead for the future and choose someone now that you trust to make decisions on your behalf at a time in the future when you may lack the mental capacity to make those decisions yourself.
There are two types of LPA you can make:
• A Property and Affairs LPA – allows you to appoint an Attorney to make decisions about the management of your finance and property, for example paying bills or selling your property on your behalf.
• A Personal Welfare LPA – gives you the opportunity to appoint an Attorney to make decisions about your personal welfare, including healthcare and medical treatment.

The HMCS National Award ceremony took place on 17 September where staff were recognised for their hard work, personal commitment and resourcefulness.

Humber and South Yorkshire Courts Board Annual Public Meeting 11 September 2009, 12 noon - 2.00 p.m.
Humber and South Yorkshire Courts Board invite you to their annual public meeting at the Town Hall, Barnsley. As part of the meeting the Chairman, Kenneth Wyatt, will be delivering a presentation, followed by an update on the work of the dedicated drugs court by Mr. Terry Kendall, Chairman of the drugs panel and Sue Delamore and Sally Woffenden from the Probation Service.
You are invited to come along and look at stands and displays being provided by various agencies who work with drug related offenders. There will be an opportunity to put questions to representatives from the South Yorkshire Criminal Justice Board (SYLCJB) who will be exhibiting as part of the main event.
Doors will open at 12 noon and the event is expected to finish by 2pm.

Greenwich Magistrates' Court Centenary Court Open Day Saturday 19 September 2009, 9.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m
What does it feel like to be part of a court case now or judge whether someone was guilty 100 years ago? Come to the historic Greenwich Magistrates’ Court and find out about its past then possibly become part of its future.
Entry is free of charge, with no advanced booking required. Greenwich Magistrates’ Court is at 9 Blackheath Road SE10 8PE. The nearest tube is DLR station Deptford Bridge and nearest train station is Greenwich. Bus routes 53 and 177 stop nearby.
Visitors can look forward to a lively programme of activities that includes:
• behind the scenes tours, including the court rooms and prison cells
• watching and taking part in Edwardian and modern day mock hearings – decide on innocence or guilt and sentences to fit the crime
• meeting the mounted police, police dogs, and exploring a police van, then climbing on board a prison vehicle and a 1910 fire engine.
• demonstrations of fingerprinting and electronic tagging
• speaking to magistrates who make vital decisions on behalf of the local community.
There will be a free raffle and historical displays along with a gallery of display stands from local organisations and the court’s justice partners including the Crown Prosecution Service, Serco, London Fire Service, Police, Probation Service, Witness Service and Victim Support, and domestic violence charities.
With all the criminal justice agencies and many other services represented under one roof, the open day promises to be of interest to people of all ages.

Cumbria and Lancashire Courts Board Public Meeting 3 September 2009
The Cumbria and Lancashie Courts Board will be holding a public meeting on Thursday 3 September 2009 at Carlisle Combined Court, Earl Street, Carlisle at 2.00pm.
Courts Boards are not involved in any judicial decisions, their role is instead to offer an opportunity for local people to contribute to decisions such as:
• Where courts are located;
• How customer service can be improved;
• How the best use can be made of resources to deliver a high level of service across the range of courts: civil, family and criminal.
Please note that the Board will not comment on individual cases or on sentencing matters.

Regional venues for the Administrative Court
From 21 April 2009 it will be possible to issue most Administrative Court proceedings at the District Registry of the High Court at Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds or Manchester as well as at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
The four centres will be located at:

The Honourable Mr Justice Beatson will have responsibility for the Administrative Court on the Wales and Midland circuits. The Honourable Mr Justice Langstaff will be responsible on the Northern and North-Eastern circuits. They will hear Administrative Court matters while on circuit and liaise with Presiding Judges, other nominated Administrative Court judges and Senior Circuit Judges sitting as deputy High Court Judges to ensure that the Administrative Court workload out of London is appropriately managed.
The work of the Administrative Court is varied, consisting of the administrative law jurisdiction of England and Wales as well as a supervisory jurisdiction over lower courts and tribunals. The Court is responsible for all Judicial Review applications as well as dealing with a wide range of statutory appeals and applications. The regionalisation of the Administrative Court stems from the January 2007 report, Justice Outside London.
