The ICO is the UK's independent public body set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.
With this in mind, our website has been written and designed to reflect the ICO’s approach to everything we do. Accessible, approachable, friendly and always ready to help, it’s also authoritative and constantly updated with the latest news and topics.
Members of the public have a dedicated area where they can find out how to protect their personal information and gain access to official information. There are also a number of topic specific guides. These cover a number of common issues including credit, education, health, housing and junk mail. All the necessary contact details can be found quickly and easily, and the complaints procedure is fully explained.
Organisations also have their own area. This provides practical, ‘how to’ information, including guidance and information about how organisations should comply with the four areas of legislation we oversee and our thoughts on subjects which include CCTV, employment, marketing and advice for new businesses. It also includes pages which bring together our guidance relating to specific sectors, including the charity, health and education sectors.
The site also features a comprehensive range of online tools and resources. In the decision notices area, you can search for notices using a variety of criteria. Our comprehensive document library contains publications, factsheets, reports and more.
The site also provides a full glossary to the terms and phrases we use, and users can use our online request form to order any of the free briefing notes, training materials, CDs and DVDs we produce. As a simple way to keep up to date with the latest news from the ICO, we have three RSS feeds on the site, plus a monthly e-newsletter service gives you the opportunity to keep up to date with the ICO's developments.
