The Sentencing Council for England and Wales promotes greater consistency in sentencing, whilst maintaining the independence of the judiciary. The Council produces guidelines on sentencing for the judiciary and aims to increase public understanding of sentencing.

Strong interest in Sentencing Competition
02 February 2011

The deadline for expressions of interest from LPC and BPTC students in the Sentencing Council’s Sentencing Competition has now passed.  We were very pleased to receive over 200 entries. Look out for future updates as the competition progresses, culminating in the final rounds at The Old Bailey in March 2011 and presided over by our Chairman, Lord Justice Leveson.


Justice Committee publishes response to consultation

The Justice Committee has today published its response to the Sentencing Council’s consultation on assault. This includes the oral and written evidence provided to the Justice Committee, along with their comments to the Sentencing Council.  Further details can be found here.


Assault draft guideline consultation now closed
06 January 2011

The Sentencing Council’s consultation on its revised guideline on assault has now closed following the 12-week consultation period. The Council is grateful to all those who responded, and will now be considering all submissions. The definitive guideline and the Council's response to the consultation submissions is expected to be announced in February.
