A consultation on a proposal to merge Cambridge and East Cambridgeshire Local Justice Areas.

The consultation outlines the issues surrounding future provision of court services in the South Area of Cambridgeshire and the proposal to merge of the two current Local Justice Areas and Benches of Cambridge and East Cambridgeshire. The amalgamated Bench will be known as the South Cambridgeshire Bench. Sittings will continue to take place at Cambridge and Ely.

A total of 12 responses were received for proposal on the merger of the East Cambridgeshire and Cambridge Local Justice Areas.

Following the decision to close Ely Magistrates’ Court as set out in the Responses to Consultation document HMCS CP(R) 02/10, it makes little practical sense for there to be two separate Local Justice Areas. Therefore the Lord Chancellor has decided that East Cambridgeshire LJA and Cambridgeshire LJA should merge to form South Cambridgeshire LJA.
