Early reading: Day 2

Communication/information prior to day 2 of the continuing professional development training

Provide guidance to teachers with the invitation to day 2 of the continuing professional development (CPD) training and ask them to be prepared to discuss:
  • what they have done in classrooms since day 1 of the CPD training;
  • their assessment of the progress of identified pupils and their evidence of the impact of their work on all pupils in their class.

Send an outline of Lesson Study from the booklet Leading improvement using the Primary Framework: Guidance for headteachers and senior leaders to all teachers of pupils in Years 1, 3 and 5.

Ask the participants to complete the following pre-course task.

  • Discuss with your headteacher and subject leader what you learned from day 1 and plan how you will carry out the interim task.
  • Identify four pupils whose progress you will track in reading.
  • Work in school with one or more colleagues to improve your practice in relation to the teaching of reading, with a particular focus on using guided reading.
  • Be prepared to discuss the outcomes of your classroom-focused collaborative CPD in terms of the progress of identified children against your chosen theme.
  • Read the flyer Models of classroom-focused collaborative CPD that work and the booklet Leading improvement using the Primary Framework: Guidance for headteachers and senior leaders (00484-2007BKT-EN).

This task will be linked to the last session of the day, which will focus on using Lesson Study as a school-based model of CPD to embed improved practice.
