Proposal for revising the tables in the annual School Workforce Statistical First Release
As part of the Department's aim to make its statistics relevant and useful, a user consultation on the proposed content of the "School Workforce in England: November 2010" publication is now being carried out. The survey is available here and users are invited to respond before the survey closes on 18 March 2011. The annual "School Workforce in England" Statistical First Release (SFR), scheduled for publication in April 2011, needs revising to reflect the new data collected by the first complete School Workforce Census (SWF) which took place during November and December 2010. The SWF is now the Department's sole main of data on the School Workforce in all local authority maintained schools and academy schools. The collection provides all the Department's basic information on the school workforce which is crucial to evidenced-based policy and tracking whether Ministerial commitments have been delivered. The data collected is now much richer and timelier than before and consequently this means the regular, annual release of the national headline figures can be revamped and refreshed.

The SWF collects individual level data on school teachers and other school staff that is more detailed (and timelier) than in previous years. The information collected can be used to form a broader, more useful range of school workforce data. In addition as the data all come from the same source there are no problems with trying to match data from different sources with differing purposes, methodology, coverage and timing. The proposed set of fifteen tables covers the following topics:
  • Teacher and support staff numbers;
  • Characteristics of teachers and support staff;
  • Pay of teachers;
  • Teachers' qualifications and deployment;
  • Teacher vacancies.

Statistical First Release (SFR): DfE: Participation in Education, Training and Employment by 16-18 Year Olds in England - March/June 2011
The statistics due to be published in the "Participation in Education, Training and Employment by 16-18 Year Olds in England" SFR will now be published in two parts. This follows a request from the Young People's Learning Agency (YPLA) for earlier data at Local Authority (LA) level to inform local reporting and planning processes.

In March 2011 statistics will be released for the participation of 16 and 17 year olds in education and work based learning at end 2009, disaggregated by (LA) and region. The release will take the form of 'additional information' to the SFR already published in June 2010. In June 2011 statistics will be released in a new SFR containing national level statistics for the participation of 16, 17 and 18 year olds in education and training at end 2010, including disaggregation by level of study, type of learning institution and estimates of the proportion of young people who are NEET (not in education, employment or training).

The only substantive change in practice is to bring forward the release of the local participation statistics by 3 months. The format and detail of the statistics released will not change, and hence both the local and national figures will remain as National Statistics and will continue to be produced in accordance to those standards and protocols.
