Nuclear Manufacturing

The need to reduce the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and the ever growing concerns over the increasing price and depleted reserves of fossil fuels, means that nuclear power is set to become a key energy source in the future. To respond to these concerns, the UK government is to double the contribution of power from nuclear stations and has already commissioned 10 civil nuclear power plants, with a further 11 planned in Europe and 350 globally, each with a construction cost of approximately $4bn.

As the UK’s centre for low carbon technology, Yorkshire and Humber is ideally located to take advantage of the significant opportunities available in the supply chain for the nuclear construction industry in the UK and globally.

Rolls Royce have now chosen South Yorkshire as the location for their $70m civil nuclear factory and this can only boost the manufacturing strength of both nuclear and non-nuclear construction within the region and see the demand for support services soar.
This investment is supported by an advanced engineering and manufacture infrastructure within the region, constructed from distinguished organisations including Sheffield Forgemasters, Sulzer pumps, Corus engineering steels, Firth Rixson, Davy Markham and Siemens VAI Metals Technologies.

The region’s manufacturing infrastructure is supported by significant investment into training, skills and research and development. This includes the UK’s first nuclear PhD from Sheffield University.

The Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in South Yorkshire, is the UK’s premier advanced manufacturing technology park, providing world-class advanced solutions for industry. In December 2009, the AMP became the base for the UK’s new multi million pound Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC). The aim of the NAMRC is to rejuvenate the nuclear supply chain, assist companies to new manufacturing technologies and develop skills into the new nuclear new build industry.

The presence of the AMP and NAMRC within has placed Yorkshire and Humber at the strategic heart of the UK’s nuclear supply industry, and increases the level to which cutting edge manufacturing research and development will be undertaken in the area and both will be able to offer you a high level of specialist support.

All the manufacturing and skills capabilities held within the region compliment the manufacture of components for nuclear power through their precision, stringent approach to quality and high safety standards. There are significant opportunities for nuclear accredited organisations to build on these standards and enhance the current supply chain offering.

In addition to existing manufacturing and skills excellence, Yorkshire and the Humber also boasts a comprehensive transport network, supplying the rest of the UK and continental Europe by land, sea and air, supporting the potential for export to continental Europe and global markets.
