Offshore Wind

The United Kingdom is the world's number 1 offshore wind market with the greatest wind electricity generation capacity in the world. Over £100 billion of investment has been committed to 2020 and beyond, as the UK moves towards its legally binding EU target of producing 15% of its energy from renewable sources by the end of the decade. Yorkshire and Humber is at the very heart of this emerging industry and offers significant opportunities for businesses targeting the offshore wind market.

The Humber estuary, on the East coast of Yorkshire, is centrally located to three of the largest Round 3 offshore wind development zones - Dogger Bank, Hornsea and Norfolk - and is now set to become the centre of this emerging sector. These three zones alone will generate over 60% of the UK’s installed offshore wind capacity when complete and can all be reached from Humber ports complex quicker than from any other UK or European alternative.

The Yorkshire and Humber ports complex is the largest in the UK and is a gateway into Europe. Over 20 offshore wind energy projects are currently under development, and the Humber is ideally placed for those in the Wash as well as the Humber Gateway and Westernmost Rough.

It’s increasingly recognised that Yorkshire and Humber will be home to a major cluster in the offshore industry, especially in the specialist areas of manufacturing, maintenance, assembly and repair. Able UK Ltd, owners of an 800ha site adjacent to deep water on the South Humber bank, are developing a world-class Marine Energy Park to meet the needs of the offshore wind industry. Associated British Ports (ABP) also has suitable land and together these sites have the capacity to house a number of wind turbine manufacturers and their supply chain.

Our coastline’s easy access to prime Northern European development areas means companies based here will have the potential to export their skills and technology to Europe.

The port of Grimsby is already a leading player in the provision of Operations & Maintenance bases for wind farms and currently provides facilities for the operations activity of Siemens and Centrica. Immingham port handles large assemblies from Sheffield and it has a number of development sites suitable for the pre-assembly, manufacture and construction of wind turbines. Hull, located on the North bank of the Humber, has excellent road and rail links and offers a number of large development sites for both manufacturing and pre-assembly.

The wind turbines are only one part of offshore development, attributing about 33% of the total value. There is huge scope for companies to become suppliers to this high value industry throughout the whole process from advanced engineering to vessel deployment. In recent months General Electric (GE), Mitsubishi Power Systems and Siemens have all pledged their commitment that they will come to the UK.

Original equipment manufacturers, casting and forging companies, metal manufacturers and engineering companies will also have significant opportunities to diversify into wind technology.

There are many regional companies able to supply the industry, such as Corus with 4.5 million tonne per annum integrated steel plant providing plates for foundations and towers. The region is also the centre for large castings, forgings and machining at all scales up to Sheffield Forgemasters and Davy Markham whose 350 tonne capability typify the ability to manufacture large components.

The marine services sector is also very strong in the region, with a long tradition of deep sea fishing and gas and oil support services stretching for 30 years and we host many companies able to offer specialist marine services including vessel operates MPI Offshore, Dalby Offshore and Svitzer Humber. Humberside Airport, in close proximity to the ports is home to the UK's second largest heliport and already serves the offshore industry.

18% of the UK’s electricity is generated in Yorkshire & Humber. Some of the largest coal-fired power stations in the UK, Drax, Ferrybridge and Eggborough, are based in the region and provide an established grid infrastructure and accessible connection points for new renewable energy developments.

Chief Executive, Greenergy
"“Greenergy has selected the Humber region for its biodiesel production facilities as it is ideally situated to sell our output into the two world scale refineries located here. It also combines the benefits of a deep sea port, allowing us to move product in and out, access to a local market and of course it allows us to source feedstock from the nationally important farming district that surrounds the port.” Andrew Owens, Chief Executive, Greenergy "
