Using the CABE education grant, the school engaged an architect, structural engineer and landscape designer to work with year five pupils to create and construct designs during a range of subject lessons.

Exploring the form and function of the canopies, the results were scale models, drawings and inhabitable structures in the school grounds. The findings were presented to the rest of the school, including parents and governors, and will inform the final design of the school’s canopies.

As well as developing a sense of ownership of their school environment, the pupils built up the confidence to test out ideas and developed architectural skills and understanding. The school project leader told CABE, ‘Throughout the whole project the children were keen and motivated and they worked hard as a team.’
