Pupils worked together to discover how a sustainable building process can work, constructing a temporary straw bale building as a case study.

Within the science and technology week at the school, pupils visited an existing local straw bale house. They considered traditional and contemporary building techniques, investigated the properties of the materials used, and took part in the build of a straw bale building on their school grounds with an experienced builder.

This practical project made many cross-curricular links and increased pupils’ awareness of their local environment. According to the school, the work motivated students who would otherwise be disengaged - ‘Learning through buildings and places puts topics and subjects learnt at school into real-life contexts and allows pupils to understand how relevant learning is to life.’ Head of Science
