Client guidance for buildings

Although every project is different, many of the lessons CABE staff and enablers would find themselves talking about to clients would be the same – issues of process, of client behaviour, of understanding design.

Reflecting on this experience, the enabling team produced Creating excellent buildings: a guide for clients. After this was published, CABE ran client training for over 1,000 people.

We continued to work closely with key individuals and leaders in central government who were promoting design quality. This included a number of ‘official design champions’, many of whom were instrumental, with enabling support, in setting up in-house capacity for design. Good examples are the design review panels set up to review police stations and hospitals with the respective departments or agencies. We also prepared or contributed substantial content to client guides specific to different building and client types – for example, Better Places for Sport with Sport England and Designing Waste Facilities: a key guide to modern design in waste with DEFRA.
