Ercol Furniture Factory

The Ercol Furniture Factory in High Wycombe projects a distinctive brand image and supports an open working environment. Designed by Horden Cherry Lee Architects.

Ercol is a privately owned furniture manufacturer that has been based in High Wycombe for around eighty years. It employs about 350 people and has two other smaller works in the area.

The company required a new building to accommodate all their activities on one site. This included the principal activity - manufacturing, as well as the company's design function, administration and a customer showroom. An important aim of the project was to use the design of the new building to project and evolve Ercol's brand as a distinctive and independent furniture designer.

Given the specialist nature of many of the craft-based skills of Ercol's staff, and their long-standing involvement with this family-owned business, the company was keen not to move far from High Wycombe. The site selected is eight miles away, next to Princes Risborough Railway Station.

The objective was to produce a building in which the landscape would remain the dominant element on the site. The resultant `low slung' building is based on a pavilion concept.
