The attraction of larger scale wind schemes can be illustrated through the high costs and long payback periods experienced by small scale initiatives.

A small turbine has been installed at Ladygrove Primary School in Telford that meets 15 per cent of the total school’s electrical needs. Installation cost around £10,000 and has resulted in a virtual income for the school of some £400 per annum in avoided electricity costs.

The turbine’s output is being recorded using computer software and compared with the wind speed recorded on the school’s weather station. The turbine accordingly acts as an educational resource and sustainability focus for the whole Telford & Wrekin community.
