Wave Two
Four large grants, three open application grants and six feasibility grants were awarded in Wave Two of Sea Change.
Large grants
Southport
Southport will receive £3,927,675 for a project to link the Grade 2 listed Arts Centre, library and art gallery in the heart of the town centre. The funding will lead to a range of improvements including a theatre, museum and popular music venue. The work will protect the heritage around Lord Street as well as offering visitors better attractions and events.
Bridlington
The promenade surrounding the recently refurbished Royal Hall and Spa Theatre complex in Bridlington will be re-designed following the award of £2,989,151 from the Sea Change programme. The project will also enable the Pembroke Gardens to be used as an outdoor performance space as well as improving public access.
Great Yarmouth
Great Yarmouth will receive £2,918,634 to regenerate the historic Deneside area of the town. Central to the project is the development of a Grade 1 listed chapel into a new arts centre which it’s hoped in time will act as a hub for the community. Historic buildings in King Street will also be repaired, and the work will allow St George’s Plain to be used as an outdoor public space.
Hastings
Hastings will receive a £1,996,384 boost to provide an artist designed piazza, performance space and cultural community centre, enhancing the new Jerwood Gallery to be built on the seafront area of the Old Town.
Open grants
South Tyneside, Foreshore, South Shields, (North East)
£1,000,000 will be used to extend the current summer programme into a year round group of activities. There will be space for theatre, and performance artists along with outdoor spaces for educational visits.
Northumberland County Council, Newbiggin (North East)
£1,000,000 - A new maritime heritage centre will be created on the seafront which will explore the fishing and sea rescue heritage of the town. A cinema and new education and exhibition space will also be created.
Worthing Borough Council, Worthing (South East)
£500,000 - The eastern end of the seafront will be regenerated with a cultural area for public art and the town’s Speakers Corner will also be reinstated.
Feasibility grants
Kent County Council, Whitstable and Margate (South East)
£30,000 will be used to explore the potential of an off road route linking the Crab & Winkle route from Canterbury to Whitstable, with the Viking Coastal Trail and the towns of Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs.
Penwith, Penzance (South West)
£30,000 will be used to develop a design guide for the promenade which will support events including public performances and themed markets.
Essex County Council, Jaywick (East of England)
£30,000 will look at developing the land around Jaywick Martello Tower, which will become a centre for creativity.
Teignbridge, Dawlish (South West)
£26,500 will be used to explore creating an Arts Café venue on the site of an old bandstand.
North Norfolk, Wells (East of England)
£25,000 will look at developing a Grade II listed building with potential for a theatre, new museum and other exhibition and workshop space.
Swale Borough Council, Leysdown
£24,000 will be used to look at developing sites of special protection and interest connected to the area’s aviation industry.
