Wave One

Three large grants, seven open application grants and five feasibility grants were awarded in Wave One of Sea Change.

Large grants

Blackpool

Blackpool has received £3,985,535 to create a 20,000 capacity outdoor performance space to showcase cultural events on the central seafront, enhancing its reputation as the capital of dance. In addition, the streetscape from the Tower to the Headland will be redesigned and enhanced.

Dover

£3,721,622 was awarded to Dover towards enhancing the Esplanade, improvementsaround the historic Dover castle including refurbishing the Great Tower, updating the secret wartime tunnels. The Bleriot Monument, which commemorates the first cross channel flight will also be refurbished and a feasibility study to consider a cable car linking the castle with the town undertaken.

Torbay

Torbay will receive a large grant of £2,219,614 to develop two projects in their English Riviera Geopark.  Artistic regeneration is at the heart of the plans with the creation of ten new studios as well as gallery space and a new visitor centre. The funding also means people will have better access to the amazing heritage and natural environment of the landscape of Berry Head on the Edge, which is home to a Napoleonic fort and the largest guillemot colony on the Channel coast.

Open application grants

Berwick, Berwick-upon-Tweed (North East)

£1,000,000 to help restore the iconic 18th century Dewar’s Lane Granary building as an exhibition space and youth hostel.

Bexhill-on-Sea, Rother District Council (South East)

£1,000,000 for a range of developments including creating a new series of seafront shelters, along with improving the setting around the Pavilion.

Boscombe, Bournemouth District Council (South West)

£455,000 to help improve access to the beach, along with a range of design improvements including refurbishment of the 1950s terrace near the pier, and a creative illumination scheme involving local artists.

Littlehampton, Arun District Council (South East)

£480,800 to build the longest seafront bench in the world and add to the town’s wider regeneration programme.

Teign, Devon County Council (South West)

£376,676 for the renovation and extension of the present museum into a contemporary Heritage Centre with a range of different exhibitions designed to continually draw new and returning visitors to the area.

Weston-Super-Mare, North Somerset Council (South West)

£951,447 for a project to create a water-themed, interactive cultural trail to promote the seafront and parks.

Westward Ho!, Torridge District Council (South West)

£100,000 for a regeneration plan to improve the promenade, create a performance space, and develop an art trail focusing on the area’s literary heritage.

Feasibility grants

Tynemouth, North Tyneside Council (North East)

£29,525 will be used to explore the possibility of three different projects. These include restoring the grade II listed Tynemouth Victorian railway station, and enhancements to the seafront promenade.

Fleetwood, Wyre Borough Council (North West)

£30,000 will be put towards plans for new developments focusing around the natural environment, arts and culture. It’s hoped the results will act as a catalyst for further regeneration and enhance the work already done in Cleveleys.

Margate, Thanet District Council (South East)

£30,000 will be used to explore the possibility of restoring the Dreamland Grade II Cinema into an entertainment complex along with creating the country’s first Heritage Seaside Amusement Park with a restored scenic railway.

Ilfracombe, North Devon Council (South West)

£30,000 for a project to look at creating a new visitor attraction centre focusing on the Victorian era, along with other cultural improvements.

Withernsea, East Riding of Yorkshire (Yorkshire)

£30,000 will be used to explore the possibility of creating a cultural centre on the south promenade providing a range of facilities including performance and exhibition space.
