Apprenticeship

A form of vocational training enabling people to earn while they learn the skills necessary to succeed in their chosen career. See the apprenticeships website for more information.

Apprenticeship framework

A collection of separately certified qualifications and courses which offer the skills, competence and underpinning knowledge for a job. The framework has a number of levels – the apprenticeship in horticulture is at level 2, while the advanced apprenticeship in horticulture is at level 3. Apprenticeship vacancy matching service

A website run by the National Apprenticeship Service where employers can advertise apprenticeship opportunities and individuals can search and apply for apprenticeships. See the apprenticeship vacancy matching service website for more details.

Competence-based element

The diploma in work-based horticulture is the competence-based element of the apprenticeship framework.

Credits

In the qualification credit framework, credits are attached to units (small steps of learning), which are then built up into qualifications.

Diploma in environmental and land-based studies

Part of a range of new qualifications introduced for 14-19 year olds in England. See the diploma in environmental and land-based studies website for more information.

Diploma in work-based horticulture

The qualification that makes up the competence-based element of the apprenticeship framework. The diploma is available as a level 2 or a level 3 qualification.

Key skills

Essential skills that learners need to support them in their job, such as communication and application of number.

Knowledge-based element

Within each diploma pathway, three of the mandatory units make up the knowledge-based element of the qualification. These units are assessed independently by either City & Guilds or ABC Awards.

National Apprenticeship Service

National occupational standards (NOS)

Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)

A new way of recognising the skills and qualifications of individuals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, where credits are attached to units (small steps of learning) which are then built up into qualifications, where required. Read about the QCF on the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency website.

Sector-approved job profile

Identifies the skills needed to be able to carry out a job. Lantra works with industry representatives to set the profiles. Read about job profiles on the Lantra website.
