North East

The North East has a rich industrial heritage and a spectacular natural landscape.

It faces many challenges in regenerating former industrial areas, reviving poor quality housing and developing an economy which has suffered from a decreasing population.

Regional partners

  • One NorthEast
  • Ignite North East (the Regional Centre of Excellence)
  • Government Office for the North East
  • Newcastle-Gateshead Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder

Architecture centres

We fund the following architecture centres:

  • Northern Architecture
Promotes high quality architecture and design in the region via projects, programmes and events for professionals and the public.

We also fund the Architecture Centre Network, a development and advocacy organisation for the architecture centres.

Tees Valley

The two-year Tees Valley pilot programme ran from July 2005 to July 2007. It was funded by CABE, One NorthEast and Tees Valley Regeneration and focused on four activity strands:

  • city-region identity and planning issues
  • Housing Market Renewal in Tees Valley
  • action masterplanning (through live case study projects)
  • design coding (also using live case studies).

Since July 2007, CABE has increased the number of regional representatives in the Tees Valley area. They and CABE staff continue to work closely with partners to build the capacity of design professionals in the Tees Valley.
