About the commission
The commissioners meet formally as a commission nine times a year, usually at our London office.
The minutes of each meeting are published on this website.
Commissioners work closely with CABE’s full-time staff, offering expert advice and support. They play an active role in leading specific areas of our work. Our design review panel, for instance, is chaired by leading architect MJ Long. Jason Prior, a hugely experienced urban designer, landscape architect and environmental planner chairs our placemaking committee while Lorna Walker, our expert in sustainable development and urban regeneration, chairs our sustainable design committee.
Appointments, roles and payment
Commissioners are appointed for a four-year term and serve for a maximum of two terms. Commissioner posts are advertised by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Appointments are made to represent the broad range of built environment professions.
Commissioners are officially responsible for ensuring that CABE complies with its statutory and administrative requirements for use of public funds. They have responsibility for establishing the overall strategic direction of CABE’s work, and overseeing delivery by monitoring performance.
The standard remuneration for commissioners is £5,900. The payments are detailed in CABE’s annual reports, laid before parliament and published on this website.
Conflicts of interest
It is fundamental to CABE’s effectiveness that our commissioners are fully engaged in the making of the built environment. Commissioners declare business and personal interests which may conflict, or be perceived to conflict, with CABE’s work. These interests are placed on a register, which is available for inspection at our offices.
