Three new commissioners join CABE
4 September 2007
CABE welcomes Piers Gough of CZWG Architects, Nick Johnson of Urban Splash and Hanif Kara of Adams Kara Taylor as commissioners.
Three new commissioners have been appointed by CABE: a widely respected architect; one of the country's most cutting-edge urban regenerators and a leading engineer.
The appointment of Piers Gough, principal of CZWG Architects LLP, Nick Johnson, deputy chief executive of Urban Splash and Hanif Kara, co-founder and director of Adams Kara Taylor, was announced by the Culture Minister, Margaret Hodge.
Piers Gough leads the design of masterplans and buildings of various types mostly in the private sector in Britain and involving a high proportion of residential accommodation. Acclaimed projects include the Green Bridge at Mile End Park from 2001, his café at Brindleyplace in Birmingham, Bankside Lofts, The Glass Building in Camden Town, Westbourne Public Lavatory and Flower Kiosk and galleries at the National Portrait Gallery. His masterplan for the Gorbals in Glasgow is seen as an exemplar of inner-city regeneration. A former president of the Architectural Association, in 1998 he was appointed a CBE for services to architecture.
Nick Johnson, over the last ten years, has been responsible for Britannia Basin in Castlefield, Manchester, and he leads the project team for New Islington, Manchester's Millennium Community, and Park Hill, Sheffield, Europe's largest listed building. Nick is a distinguished Visiting Fellow of Architecture at Yale University and Chair of Marketing Manchester.
Hanif Kara has worked on award-winning schemes throughout Europe. His projects have included Peckham Library and the National Trust headquarters in Swindon, which won 17 design awards, and the Phaeno Science Centre in Germany. Hanif is a longstanding visiting lecturer at the Architectural Association, Harvard University Graduate School of Design and at Cornell University. He is a member of CABE's London 2012 design review panel.
Piers Gough and Hanif Kara's four-year appointments will run with immediate effect (ending 31 July 2011) and Nick Johnson's from 15 December 2007 (ending 14 December 2011).
John Sorrell, chair of CABE, commented:
'CABE is delighted welcome such eminent new commissioners. Nick Johnson, Piers Gough and Hanif Kara bring with them a wide range of experience, and impressive records in their respective fields.'
