Newcastle streets named among best in England

9 May 2007

Assessed as part of CABE's campaign for better designed streets, Blackett Street and Quay Link have been praised for their innovative approach to street design.

On the day the government launches its new Manual for Streets at Newcastle's Centre for Life, CABE has named Blackett Street and the Quay Link (the series of streets linking from the South of Grey Street down to the Quayside) as leading examples of good street design.

Assessed as part of CABE's campaign for better designed streets, both Blackett Street and Quay Link were cited for their innovative approach to street design and in particular for the way in which traffic and pedestrians successfully share the space in a busy public place. Local planning and engineering teams were also praised for their thoughtful approach to the design which led them to look outside the conventional highways arrangements and draw inspiration from across Europe.

The Manual for Streets is a new publication that provides guidance for practitioners involved in the planning, design, provision and approval of new residential streets, and modifications to existing ones. It aims to increase the quality of life through good design which creates more people-orientated streets.
