Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children, London

This school is relocating and the staff feel strongly that the particular needs of the pupils should be built into the process.

The education grant will fund the Hands-on sculpture project. Hands play a vital role in communication at the school, so pupils will work with a sculptor to explore the idea of transformation. The final result will be a portable sculpture to move with them to temporary accommodation and then to the new school.

Judges' comments

‘We found this project interesting and it was clear what pupils would get out of participating. Considering the emotional side to design is an original idea and one that we thought appealing.’
