Columbus School and College
Designed by Haverstock Associates.
Overall design quality rating: good
The commitment to good design has culminated in a planning application that proposes a school and a college that has the makings of a high quality proposal. The spatial organisation of the school and the college is expressed well in the elevations and, together with the fenestration, creates welcoming buildings. It is important that this commitment to good design continues during construction and that the following points are considered before the application is approved. The college’s front entrance and atrium space should be inspiring and uplifting. The materials, therefore, need to be robust and give the spaces an enduring character. Both buildings require careful attention to detailing, for example the mullions to ‘the jungle’ should be obscured so that the light and airy feel to the space is not lost. A comprehensive landscape strategy is required to mitigate the impact the large expanse of car parking will have on the character of Partridge Avenue. The ecological focus to the school needs to be matched with an equally exemplary resource strategy for both the school and the college. Ambitious environmental targets should be committed to within the planning application. The planning application should also be updated to show how any potential overheating problems in the college atrium and linking corridor within the college will be mitigated.
