The Waldron Health Centre

New Cross, London

The Waldron Health Centre provides joined-up and patient-focused primary healthcare, and is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the UK.

The design team took an innovative design approach, taking their analysis of the patient experience back to first principles. This informed the spatial and material qualities of the building, creating a building that is accessible and easy to use - with patient journeys in mind.

The centre is intended as a focus for the local community. Its presence on a main road and alongside New Cross train station makes it something of a local landmark.

The building is designed to serve the current population, and to be able to adapt and develop with the growth in population anticipated in the Thames Gateway. It won the Best Primary Care Design category in the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2008. Robust environmental features have been integrated from the beginning such as high levels of insulation and good thermal mass.
