The Quad

Derby

A community arts centre with an international agenda at the heart of Derby’s cultural regeneration. Designed by Fielden Clegg Bradley.

The Quad is located next to the historic Guildhall Market in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter, the cultural zone of the city centre around the cathedral.  It houses a large environmentally controlled exhibition space, two cinemas, education facilities, a café and informal exhibition spaces.

Fielden Clegg Bradley won the competition to design a new building for QArts and Metro Cinema (who subsequently merged to form Quad). The building has a dramatic, twisted form with volumes projecting out of the building and is clad in natural stone from a local quarry.  It spans three floors and is organised so that the flexible areas face onto the square, while the cinema and gallery are at the back.
