Integrating three existing Victorian buildings in the heart of the resort to create an arts complex with national clout and local appeal.
Southport has been through a renaissance in the last 15 years and is now adopting the identity of “England’s Classic Resort”. Plans for the Southport Cultural Centre follow the success of other culture-led schemes including a new theatre and convention centre.
Southport Cultural Centre aims to attract visitors throughout the year and includes a major contemporary art space for nationally-significant artworks and exhibitions. Other facilities include exhibitions from Sefton Council’s own collections, a theatre and a 600-capacity studio space. Outdoor events will take place in a large square in front of the building.
Sefton Council has a good record of targeting local audiences including young people, people with mental health issues and harder to reach groups.
Southport Cultural Centre received a £4 million grant from Sea Change.
