North Greenwich Underground Station

London

North Greenwich Underground Station

Description

The station is a long, rectangular, underground box - 360m long, 30m wide and 13m deep. This has been excavated and covered with a u-shaped 'lid' at ground level. Much of this volume is dedicated to operational functions, with approximately one-third visible to the travelling public.

The roof is supported by 21 pairs of V-shaped concrete columns, cast in situ. These are clad in blue mosaic glass tiles which also face the walls flanking the entrance escalators and ticketing hall. The concourse is suspended from the roof by 80mm diagonal solid steel tie rods with stainless steel finish and 48-hour fire protection. The concourse base incorporates a void accessible to maintenance staff. A series of convex steel ribs remains exposed above the concourse.

The ticketing facilities are situated to the west, at the nearest point of arrival on the station's concourse, close to the base of the entrance escalators.
The concourse runs fairly centrally down the visible station length. Full-height voids between the concourse edges and side walls to the outer platforms rise from the platform level below. Low level glass side panels to the concourse edges provide views to the platforms. The blue theme is reinforced on the side walls.

Access to the platforms is via escalators on both sides of the concourse. Alternative access is provided by lift. The three tracks are aligned east-west, and are slightly asymmetrical relative to the concourse. Glazed partitions at the platform edges form a barrier between the platform and the tracks.

A cantilevered steel scissors stair, suspended on diagonal hollow steel tubes between the concourse and the platforms, provides maintenance access to the escalator machine rooms which are suspended above the platforms. Lift access between the ground level and the concourse is also provided.
