Design process
Managing the project
A committed and well organised management structure meant that the building procurement and design was completed with the input of staff and stakeholder groups.
South Devon Healthcare NHS Trust found a design team through the PFI Bid process. The initial proposal hardly changed during the process, thanks to a robust design and the faith shown by the client and the delivery team in the architect’s ability to realise the brief.
Using the CABE enabler
A CABE enabler was allocated to the Newton Abbot Community Hospital to:
- give the Primary Care Trust advice
- assist in defining the brief
- help evaluate the three bids in design terms
- write a critique of the proposals
- provide a design ‘language’ to discuss the proposals.
Engaging the client and stakeholders
The CABE enabler used the Achieving Excellence Design Evaluation Toolkit (AEDET) to engage the client and stakeholders.
The CABE enabler’s assistance in presenting to wider consultees was appreciated by the hospital, especially the straightforward explanation to a diverse audience of how design quality can be assessed and evaluated.
‘The layout has been developed to be as simple and clear as possible to ease wayfinding for those using the building….It also promotes privacy and dignity by demonstrating a clear hierarchy of spaces, moving from the public to the very private’
