Evaluation
The project was completed on time and within budget satisfying the requirements of the brief after being highly praised at the bid selection stage.
The entrance invites visitors in
On arrival visitors enter a clear and legible single reception in a public area that is very well lit by the atrium. The waiting area is visible towards the other end of the atrium, and there are a variety of seating types and arrangements available. From the reception area the visibility of the first floor helps in the understanding of the building’s layout.
Natural light fills the hospital
The courtyard at ground level gives therapeutic views and can be accessed by patients and visitors. There are windows at the end of nearly every corridor providing light, views, and a sense of connection to the outside. Openings are also generously sized throughout the building as is the floor to ceiling height in shared ward rooms.
Ward rooms are grouped in four-bed rooms or as single rooms. The four-bed rooms face outwards from the ward wings and have large windows with good views while the single-bed rooms have windows overlooking the internal courtyard.
High quality materials are evident
The quality of finishes within the building is generally very high, with good quality materials fitted to a high level of workmanship. The timber rooms in the corridors add warmth and variety to the routes and provide visual reference points on any journey.
The overall impression is an uplifting environment which has been designed with care and provides the trust with a benchmark for future buildings.
