Jubilee Campus, Nottingham University

Description

The 12ha crescent-shaped Jubilee Campus follows the old boundaries of Wollaton Park and the former Nottingham Canal. The main feature of the scheme is an artificial lake which extends the full length of the site and serves as a reminder of the main University Park campus.

There is a woodland margin to the south east which visually screens the residential area beyond. A lakeside promenade serves as the primary campus pedestrian thoroughfare, and the academic and teaching buildings face out over the water. Nine principal buildings house academic schools, support units and halls of residence.

The main faculties's three-storey buildings are similar in form, each consisting of three wings connected either by full-height sloping glazed atria or landscaped open courtyards. Vertical circulation within the faculties is provided at the back by circular stair towers which culminate in roof mounted air handing units. The eight gently moving cowls are one of the site's distinguishing features.

The central teaching facility incorporates three-tiered lecture theatres with 100, 200 and 300 seats respectively. One of the most dramatic features of the scheme is the Learning Resources Centre, an inverted conical shape set on a central island platform, which accommodates the library and a 24-hour computer laboratory. The halls of residence are flat roofed and brick faced, with a conventional cross-wall masonry construction.
