Cross Street South

Wolverhampton

Streets, parking and pedestrianisation

Cross Street South is a best practice example of how to handle streets, parking and pedestrian provision in a housing development.

Entrances are clearly marked by wooden structures. The front courts provide privacy but are shallow enough to maintain the sense of enclosure of the streets. Car parking is at the rear of the new blocks, allowing street frontages that are geared towards pedestrians. Convenient cycle storage is provided near to the main entrance.

The focus on pedestrian experience is crucial to the success of the scheme. Adjacent roads feel safe and are well-overlooked by windows – as are the shared private space and car parking area at the rear.
