Canklow proved that targeted enabling advice at a crucial stage in the planning and design process can have a positive impact on the design quality of development proposals.

This positive outcome would not have been possible without the support of the key stakeholders.

South Yorkshire Housing Association

South Yorkshire Housing Association was willing to think differently and change its approach to the site.  They took a step back and risked the programme in order to develop a better set of proposals. This small investment up-front and the employment of good architects led to a development they can be proud of.

Rotherham Council

Rotherham Council planning and housing market renewal teams kept their focus on delivering the objectives of the area framework, with support from the CABE enabler.

The willingness of the officers at Rotherham to engage proactively with South Yorkshire Housing Association at an early stage led to a planning application that met their aims for high quality development.  It also created a detailed, design-led framework for the wider area that can guide future development.

Transform South Yorkshire

Transform South Yorkshire learned from Canklow and developed its own enabling support for such projects via the Home Builders Advisory Panel and through its Delivering Design Quality initiative.

The final result

Engaging with the wider context has ensured that this is a high quality housing development in a sustainable location.  It has good public transport links, good social infrastructure, access to open space, schools, neighbourhood community and retail facilities.
