American School in London

Design process

The extensive building renovation of ASL began in 1999 and once construction was completed in 2001 the focus turned to the external landscape. The brief for the grounds included landscaping, fencing, planting, seating, sculpture, parking and security. The school wanted an exciting, creative plan that reflected their new and innovative interior but still blended with the residential location. It needed to be comfortable and welcoming but express a sense of adventure and fun, representing the quality of the institution without being obviously American or British.

Farrer Huxley Associates were appointed as the landscape architects and conducted extensive consultation with staff and students. The school’s deputy head acted as client, but all staff were involved in the discussions throughout the process. Consultation with the students was managed by the head teacher, who was concerned about the danger of unrealistic expectations and over-consultation in a school which had already gone through a long building redesign process. Design work was displayed for student comment, and the designer was also interviewed by the school magazine.

The work was delivered in 4 phases, with the building work taking place during the school summer holidays, and completed in 2005.
