Better Public Building focuses on achieving high-quality design in all new public buildings, to enhance the environment and the community, and revitalise cities and neighbourhoods.

Better public building offers practical advice for creating new public buildings that are value for money, sustainable and a source of civic pride. It shows the steps public bodies need to follow so that those who use public services benefit from good design and includes 10 principles that clients should follow.

The Prime Minister's Award

The Prime Minister’s Award for Better Public Building recognises new buildings, places and spaces that:

  • improve the delivery of public services
  • give a sense of identity and community
  • are a source of local pride
  • help build a sustainable future.

The award is made annually to a new building project of any size and budget, commissioned by or on behalf of central or local government or by a grant-aided organisation. Uniquely, it rewards excellence in both design and procurement from across the public sector.
