Berkeley embraces Building for Life

The Berkeley Group has made a solid commitment to design quality. From now on all new developments will have to meet the national standard for well designed homes and neighbourhoods.
All schemes submitted for planning will have been assessed by Berkeley as achieving a score of at least 14 out of the 20 Building for Life criteria, that is, achieve a silver standard.
The Berkeley Group is the first developer to adopt the Building for Life silver standard as a minimum commitment. CABE has welcomed the move. Chief executive Richard Simmons described it as shrewd: ‘This will mean that planning authorities can be confident that these schemes should adhere to government policy. It will create consistently good places for Berkeley’s customers to live in.’
The Berkeley Group’s commitment to Building for Life is a key part of its Vision 2020 strategy which aims to ensure that it is seen as a leader in developing sustainable homes and communities. Rob Perrins, Group Managing Director, said that adopting the silver standard for all future development was a logical progression: ‘There is considerable synergy between the 20 Building for Life criteria and The Berkeley Group’s approach to development design.’
Several developments by The Berkeley Group have in the past achieved Building for Life standards and awards. In 2009, for example, two developments in London, City Quarter in Whitechapel and Imperial Wharf in Chelsea, gained a silver standard, and in 2008 Royal Arsenal at Woolwich won an award.
By putting into practice a minimum threshold for quality, one of country’s major urban regeneration companies has raised its game. Other developers would do well to follow suit.
