ZaanEiland
Zaanstad, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The Zaan region is one of the oldest industrial areas in the Netherlands.
The River Zaan functions as a chief arterial route. A landscape of complexity and diversity has developed along the riverbanks, with quiet gardens alongside solid industrial buildings and small timber houses. In the second half of the 20th century businesses began moving out of the area to sites more accessible by road, leaving vast opportunities for the vacant industrial sites left behind.
Zaaneiland on the Zaan river is situated 11km to the north of the centre of Amsterdam.
Maccreanor Lavington Architects have designed two parallel strips of 123 low rise housing units and a medium rise block of 33 flats on the eastern riverbank of Zaaneiland, in Zaanstad.
