Hegianwandweg

Hegianwandweg is located only 11 minutes away from Zurich city centre by tram, yet the site has a distinctively suburban flavour. It is situated between an area of 1930s blocks of flats, arranged in parallel, and a 1970s high rise home for elderly people.

Hegianwandweg is located only 11 minutes away from Zurich city centre by tram, yet the site has a distinctively suburban flavour. It is situated between an area of 1930s blocks of flats, arranged in parallel, and a 1970s high rise home for elderly people.

All the flats are well equipped and finished to high standards. They have not been built as social housing, although they still offer very good value for money compared to what is available on the Zurich housing market. Additionally the housing cooperative has a statutory policy of not letting overly large flats to individuals or childless couples.

With this project the Familienheimgenossenschaft (FGZ), a cooperative housing association dedicated to family housing entered into a new segment of the housing market, targeting their older and slightly more affluent clientele by providing high quality housing at a sensible (though not cheap) price and thus freeing up terraced houses for families on the waiting list. To this end the statutes were slightly relaxed and couples were allowed to rent 4½ room flats normally allocated only to families with at least one child, provided they were moving out of a larger cooperative property.
