Spotting Alzheimer’s early

  • December 22, 2010 | Louis

If I get Alzheimer’s disease years from now, doctors may be able to spot it with a new test before it gets too bad.

Healthy volunteers in their seventies and eighties had spinal fluid removed to check for levels of a protein and brain scans to calculate brain shrinkage. These early signs of Alzheimer’s were found in more than a third of volunteers, even though they showed no other disease symptoms,┬ásuch as┬ámemory loss.

Detecting Alzheimer’s early could make future treatments more effective.
