New baby blood test

  • January 12, 2011 | James

Genetic testing is a hot topic, so new ways to screen for genetic diseases in unborn babies always interest  me.

Currently a baby’s DNA is taken directly from womb fluid. It’s a risky procedure that can cause miscarriage, so few pregnant women take it. However, fragments of a baby’s DNA in the mother’s blood can now be separated and screened. This is much safer, so more expectant mothers may take this option if it becomes available. However, not all prospective parents will want to know what the future may hold for their baby.
