What is an RSS feed?

RSS, or 'really simple syndication', is an easy way for you to be automatically updated on your preferred websites. Instead of having to go to each site to see if there is something new, you can use RSS to tell you every time something new is published. You can also set a time for the retrieval of these feeds.

How can you tell if there is an RSS feed?

Websites offering RSS feeds typically carry a small orange button, often labelled 'RSS' or 'XML'.

How can you use RSS?

By using RSS-reading software, or a growing number of web-based services, you can tell your computer to monitor the RSS feeds of different sites. When a new item is published, your computer will alert you.

How do you get a news reader?

There are a range of different news readers available (also called an aggregator or an RSS reader). Different news readers use different operating systems, so you will need to take this into account when you make your choice. There are many different types of free and paid news readers; some are accessed using a web browser, and others are programs you can download.

How do you sign up to RSS feeds from the Department for Children, Schools and Families?

Navigate to the page of interest, check if it has an RSS feed and click on the link. Alternatively, search for RSS feeds through your Reader software. Subscribing to RSS feeds to obtain regular updates is simple with a news reader. One way is to copy and paste the URL for the feed into your news reader, or you can get the URL for the feed by clicking on the orange 'RSS' button next to the feed name.
