Pensions Tax Simplification Newsletter No 12 - April 2006

Contents

1. Introduction - A-Day is here

So we have made it, A-Day 6th April 2006 has arrived and we are now in the new world for the taxation of pensions. This is a short edition of our regular newsletter which we hope will serve as a reminder for one or two last minute things.

2. Pension Schemes Online Goes Live!

The Pension Schemes Online service will be available from 12 noon today, 6th April 2006.

For those of you who have received your activation tokens and Scheme Administrator or Practitioner IDs, you will be able to complete online the registration process to get your User ID and password. You will then be able to use Pension Schemes Online.

For those of you who haven’t already pre-registered to use the service, you will be able to do this online to obtain your activation token and Scheme Administrator or Practitioner IDs, once the service goes live.

As mentioned in Newsletter No 11, unless you need to go online straightaway, please don’t all rush at once to use the online service. This will enable us to monitor progress in the early days of the new service.

Should you have any problems with using Pension Schemes Online, please contact the HMRC online services helpdesk on 0845 6055999 or e-mail helpdesk@ir-efile.gov.uk

If you have any problems that are pensions in nature, rather than IT, please contact the APPS helpdesk as detailed at the bottom of this newsletter.

3. Acknowledgement of Online Scheme Registration

When you submit a new scheme registration via Pension Schemes Online you will receive the following acknowledgement message:

‘The information you submitted has been successfully received by HM Revenue & Customs’

Your formal acknowledgement of registration for tax relief and exemptions will be placed on your Pensions Notice board within 24 hours. Either an e-mail alert will be sent to tell you it is there, or if you have requested paper notices and reminders, you will receive a paper acknowledgement in the post instead of the email alert.

4. Mandatory Online Filing

The Registered Pension Schemes Manual says that it is mandatory for certain forms to be submitted online. As you will know, this is not yet the position. Mandatory online delivery of these forms by Scheme Administrators and Practitioners submitting them on their behalf, has been postponed until a date which has yet to be determined. For a list of which forms will be available both online and in paper format see Newsletter 10 item 2.

5. Contact Us

If you have any questions about anything to do with tax rules for pensions and you cannot find the answer in the Registered Pension Schemes Manual, you can contact us by email, phone or write to us using the details found on our contact page.
