About us

The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) is a customer service organisation. We issue passports and provide passport verification services. Through the General Register Office (GRO), we issue certificates for births, deaths and marriages.

Who we are

The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) is an Executive Agency of the Home Office and it incorporates the General Register Office (GRO).

What we do

Our people see to it that we regularly exceed our customer service performance targets and they enabled us to issue 5.3m passports in the last year. The scope of our work has grown since 2008 when we joined with the General Register Office; certificate issuing services and life event registrations are now a vital and growing aspect of our work.

How we work

At our busiest times of year, IPS employs over 4,000 people across the UK in seven regional offices, over 60 interview offices and GRO in Southport and headquarters in central London. We have two types of passport office open to the public: regional offices and interview offices.
