New Stobhill Hospital

New Stobhill Hospital wins 2010 Prime Minister’s Award

Glasgow’s pioneering New Stobhill Hospital won the 2010 Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award.

The design by Reiach and Hall Architects was governed by the hospital’s ethos that the patient comes first.

New Stobhill Hospital opened in May 2009 and is serving around 400,000 patients a year. Robert Calderwood, Chief Executive, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: ‘Services have been designed around the needs of patients to enhance the quality of care and speed up diagnosis and treatment. The hospital has improved the patient experience by providing swifter treatment, with fewer hospital visits, and has enabled staff to work more effectively.’

The Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Building

PM's Award

Good design is more than good looks: it means that buildings and spaces function in a way that adds to the quality of life for those who use them. Running for 10 years from 2001, the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award recognised new buildings, places and spaces that improve the delivery of public services, give a sense of identity and community, are a source of local pride, and help build a sustainable future.

The award was made annually to a new building project of any size and budget commissioned by or on behalf of central or local government or by a grant-aided organisation. Uniquely, it rewarded excellence in both design and procurement from across the public sector.
