Hull Truck Theatre faced an uncertain future when a compulsory purchase order forced it to leave its home of 25 years. Today, however, the company has a state-of-the-art new home, and Hull city centre a striking piece of architecture.
The city has always been a central to Hull Truck Theatre’s identity. The new building’s brick structure echoes the city’s grand old warehouses, with an industrial aesthetic further reinforced through the use of steelwork set into the brick and bolted onto concrete walls. This limited palette gives the theatre a robust, permanent feel.
Inside, the stage in the main 440-seat auditorium juts out, maintaining the old theatre’s intimate feel. A separate small studio theatre provides flexible space, with retractable seating and a sprung timber floor for dance. The foyer has the feel of a street with brick paving, welcoming people in at all times of day, not just for a performance.
"A beautifully crafted city landmark."
