About the project

Kaleidoscope brings together in one building an extensive range of health, social and educational services for children. It also benefits the whole community and has contributed to the regeneration of a deprived area of south London.

The imaginative design of the building allows different departments from Lewisham Primary Care Trust - originally scattered across the borough - to work effectively together. Consultation with those using the building was a driving force from the start - from a public exhibition at competition stage to artwork by local school children in the completed building.

Colourful elevations attract attention from the street but at the same time privacy for the children and their families is maintained. A central courtyard garden - seen from each floor - provides a shared green space at the heart of the building.

Innovative sustainable systems have been accommodated within an exacting budget. The building is naturally ventilated and heating and cooling pipes are embedded in the reinforced concrete slab, eliminating the need for air conditioning and reducing energy use. Integrated acoustic absorption on opening windows keeps noise levels down in a busy urban environment.

The judges said: 'A delighted client and an exemplary care facility'.
