Trafalgar Square The World Squares for All masterplan's first phase has transformed Trafalgar Square and enhanced the setting of the historic buildings which surround it.

Inside a cafeThe project team has connected the National Gallery into the heart of the Square through a broad flight of stairs, with a newly pedestrianised North Terrace including a new café and toilet facilities.

Around the Square, all the approach routes have been improved, including new pedestrian space at St Martin 's Place and widened footpaths to the new boulevards of Northumberland Avenue and Pall Mall East.

Not only has the work been completed on time and to budget after a massive consultation exercise, but project aims have been exceeded. There has, for example, been a 25% reduction of noise and air pollution, the scheme has delivered 8000m2 of new public spaces, and the number of traffic accidents in the area has been cut through significantly reduced car traffic and an increase in public transport and pedestrian traffic.

The Judges said:

"This project has taken more than a decade from conception to delivery - but has proved well worth the wait. Trafalgar Square is now a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant place to visit."
