City of Manchester Stadium Last summer, the City of Manchester Stadium was the centrepiece of one of the most successful Commonwealth Games ever.

At the start of the 2003/04 football season, Manchester City Football Club plays its first game as the long-term tenants of a sustainable legacy for the stadium.

An innovative stadium that sets new standards, the building is a stunning icon of regeneration in east Manchester.

Many attributes contribute to the success of the stadium. A central feature is its distinctive and dynamic form; continuous concourses, together with ramps, provide safe and efficient circulation; a combination of large adjustable louvres, a transparent roof edge and under-pitch heating ensure the grass has enough light and air to create a good playing surface and recessed treads in the seating bowl ensure good views for all spectators.

The judges said:

"An excellent regeneration project that sets high design standards."
