Tarporley

Design process

Inspired by a relatively recent mews infill development off Tarpoley's High Street behind the Swan Inn, Bell Meadow Pulford Ltd sought to create a similar scheme behind the Rising Sun public house.

Problems arose after initial land purchases, as the Parish Council who owned some of the proposed land for the site, were opposed to the development. However, after purchasing a closing business further up the street, applying for change of use and turning it into Sir John Crewe Terrace, the Parish Council acquiesced. They were satisfied with a reduced development that saw half the site designated as a public car park.

The council conservation officer facilitated further developments by approaching the council's seemingly inflexible guidance with a view to the appropriateness of the end product. Minimum highway carriage widths and minimum distances between windows were dispensed with to produce schemes with a tight urban feel that has diminished car impact.
