St Mary's Island

Design process

As a response to the skilled labour shortage, the Fishing Village has made innovative use of a tried and tested construction practice: pre-fabricated timber frame construction.

This has been used to provide a cleaner site, a high level of quality control and because it does not need as many people to build as normal construction types. It has been used on a large scale for four to five floor apartment building and is an innovation in volume house building.

The timber construction follows standards that are set by Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA) so all timber from sustainable sources is certified by the Forestry Commission.
