Design process
John Thompson and Partners obtained planning approval on behalf of Laing Homes South West Thames and Linden Homes, joint purchasers of the land. Extensive consultation with local residents and with the planning authorities, plus an environmental impact assessment, provided for speedy planning approval. Due to restricted access, the Council allowed only limited development, which included a cap on the bedroom numbers.
John Thompson was architect for the phases developed by Linden Homes. Laing Homes used Omega Partnership, with standard house types for Phase 2, and Clague Architects for later stages. Linden Homes led the four housing associations responsible for the affordable homes.
Guidelines for the landscape were by Whitelaw Turkington and set out a basic language for open spaces, road infrastructure and the way the two interrelate. Construction is traditional, though there is some timber framing. Dwellings, which are designed to be energy efficient, have double-glazed windows.
Parking is provided within the curtilage of dwellings, or in parking courts, at an average rate of 1.5. The 10% visitor parking is accommodated in lay-bys. Buses provide public transport to the site.
